Coindre Hall Park Community, Inc.

Coindre Hall Park, originally West Neck Farm, was a working gentleman’s farm owned by George McKesson Brown. It is a passive park and a historic site; the ecological features of the park are also historic, making it the most ecologically significant park on Huntington Harbor and qualifying it as a nature preserve. It is located in the Audubon Society Important Bird Area (IBA) of global priority. Coindre Hall Park Community Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, 100% volunteer group dedicated to protecting the passive recreational use of this park and the protection, connection, and restoration of the habitats that are historic natural features and a part of Long Island’s ecological legacy.

Through educational presentations, scientific research studies, nature programs, including Nature walks and invasive removal we hope to raise awareness of the ecological value of this site. We are the only nonprofit group that have taken steps to accentuate the ecological integrity of this ecological gem. We advocate for thoughtful restoration that preserves the ecological history as well as the architectural history of this Gold Coast Farm called West Neck Farm.

Help Us Preserve Coindre Hall Park

The Problem

In July 2021 Heavy machinery cleared vegetation and removed trees in the Park. On the second day, there were no signs nor was there any information about the work being done in the park. Suffolk County Parks directed the public to the Coindre Hall advisory Board (CHAB) website.The clearing would continue and it would take a Stop work order from the DEC to make them stop. In 2021 the DEC issued a stop work order to the project at Coindre Hall Park after the area had been devastated, turtle eggs were crushed, animals were displaced and over 97 native trees of varying sizes were clear-cut. The removal of 97 trees equals 38,800 caterpillars that are no longer available to feed birds. Over 1 acre of wetland and woodland received this treatment.
